Author(s):

Dr. Mohammad Shoeb Ansari

Abstract:

The Indian paper industry, a vital contributor to the nation's economy, has evolved from traditional handmade production to a modern, diversified sector supporting education, publishing, packaging, and commerce. Despite the rise of digital media, paper remains relevant, driven by rising literacy, hygiene awareness, and e-commerce. Key strengths include strong domestic demand, export potential, supportive government policies, sustainability initiatives, and growth in specialty and hygiene paper segments. However, the industry faces significant challenges such as intense international competition, a fragmented structure, rising operational costs, digital substitution, stringent environmental regulations, and raw material constraints. Addressing these weaknesses requires technological modernization, investment in recycling infrastructure, policy support, and strategic consolidation. With proactive innovation and sustainable practices, the Indian paper industry can redefine its role in the digital age while meeting ecological and economic expectations. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the industry's strengths and weaknesses to inform future strategies and policy development.
