Author(s):

Dr. Christina Tsolaki

Abstract:

This study examined the complex and critical trends of burnout, well-being, work-life balance, abusive behavior, corruption, and employee effectiveness in a period where technology is advancing, and businesses declare they are more people-oriented, investing in people’s wellbeing and development. The annual trillions lost due to burnout, disengagement, inefficiency, and corruption reveal deficiencies in systems, business environments, and governments. Such situations force humanity and businesses worldwide to make semantic arrangements to change this status quo. A mixed methods framework was used for this research. A combination of existing secondary data collected from Gallup, Deloitte LLP, McKinsey & Company, and European Union statistics, combined with the qualitative data obtained from the focus group discussions and individual interviews, attempted to give a holistic picture of the themes under investigation. Burnout affects 7% of employees. Findings showed that if people work fewer hours, and management creates a positive and supportive working environment there will be an improvement in employee work- life balance, well-being and consequently an increase in engagement and productivity fact which will be of great benefit to the companies.
In the study it was highlighted the harmful nature of abusive behavior and its impact. This underscores the immediate need for focused interventions and the establishment of clear and transparent support systems to tackle these issues, minimize their effects, and communicate within the organization that such behaviors are unacceptable and will be penalized and findings on the theme of corruption uncovered a lack of accountability, proper control, and ethical culture at work, as well as weak enforcement of anti-corruption laws. This highlights the need for comprehensive reform and the development of stronger mechanisms. Regarding employee effectiveness, leaders and managers must take steps to address gaps in training and communication and implement strategies to ensure that employees have the necessary tools and support from management to succeed. Tackling these issues can mitigate the risk of ineffectiveness and improve overall organizational performance. The researcher is convinced that all the themes studied contribute to an "unhealthy" work environment and lead to significant business losses. It's essential for leaders and managers to reconsider, reform, and create new systems, as well as develop new mechanisms, rules, and regulations to address these challenges, ultimately building sustainable businesses and fostering effective employees.
